Thinking about God,you will think that you can do idiotic things in your life,and with a prayer everything will be fixed.This is not become conscious that you will also die you will turn spiritual.Only when this awareness of mortality
steps in to you, you will turn inwards. The moment you will also want to know what the source of thid life is. You will develop the longing to know what this is all about, and what the beyond this thing.It will be come to a natural quest.That is the spiritual process.
Edit: When we are in trouble we thinking about solution,when we felt our all road is closed that time we need our God's help or God's blessings. Peace is one of the signs that confirms the presence of God.
If you have confidence on your God nothing what ever trouble to you. You will be have in word peace in difficult times.It is a sign of God's presence. A small story i remember from my childhood one day I am went to visit a Temple with my father ans we enter inside the temple that was evening time and no one was there. When we sit down for pray after sometimes we felt something was fall on our head and body. We shocked no one was there we felt like a rain drops fall on us. Still we don't know what the thing is? And when I grown up i faced it again in my life, i don't know it's common or not ?

Somehow we have never seen God but we felt his presence in different ways. As like God is with us in everywhere where we need him in every difficult situation of our life.
The amount of love and appreciation from God that you feel is directly proportionate to how much you are willing to love yourself. If you beat yourself up get upset when things don't go right, tell yourself that there's something wrong with you won't feel God's love.
